An OGP UK non-contact, video-based inspection and measurement system is helping transform a vital range of design and quality control tasks used in the development of one of the world’s leading brands of digital radios.
Sepura has chosen a compact, bench top SmartScope MVP 250 coordinate measuring machine to check measurements of components in its TETRA radio equipment at its research and development headquarters in Cambridge.
Parts in the assembled units such as plastic mouldings and elastomer seals are measured and inspected so that the information can be rapidly exchanged with Sepura’s worldwide manufacturing partners to ensure products are made within the correct tolerances and to the highest quality standards.
Sepura engineers are full of praise for the system not only because of its speed, but also its accuracy and easy interface. They are also impressed with the machine’s dual purpose facility of producing inspection reports from measured data as well as storing images taken by the built-in high-resolution digital colour camera.
“The OGP SmartScope coordinate measuring machine has produced a massive benefit in that we are able to speed up our development processes. Critical dimensions can now be measured in-house and checked much more quickly and easily, meaning a faster data exchange with suppliers so that products are produced correctly,” explained Karl Forbes, Sepura’s mechanical team leader.
“All the engineers find this system very quick and easy to use, especially when compared to other more expensive competitor options. In addition, the technical support and training services from OGP have been very good,” he added.
The SmartScope MVP250 is equipped with a zoom lens and series of patented SmartRing LED lights for the optimum detection of feature size, position and form. Its intuitive MeasureX software provides an easy operator interface while the digital camera records high contrast, true colour images for both measurement and visual defect analysis purposes.
OGP says the cost-effective system, which is suitable for measuring small to medium volumes, can be made even more versatile with the addition of a touch probe sensor.
